MP Energy (previously Melec PowerGen Inc) MPE is the Developper, Builder, Owner and Operator of power plants throughout Africa.

MP Energy, through MPG, has demonstrated a recognized know-how, its commitment, and ability to adapt to the context and realities of Africa through a successful track-record in taking projects from concept to reality. MP Energy has successfully developed 4 Thermal IPP Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa (Kounoune 67.5 MW, Tobene 96 MW and Tobene Expansion to 115 MW in Senegal and Thika 87 MW in Kenya) and is currently constructing its 5th 120 MW Malicounda IPP plant in Senegal and has earned a reputation of ‘getting things done’ in Africa. 

In April 2019, MPG entered into a Sale and Purchase Agreement for the sale of all of its assets in Senegal, namely Tobene Power which has already been transferred, Kounoune which is expected to be transferred in the coming months and Malicounda Power which is expected to be transferred at COD+1 year.  

The MP Energy team collectively brings 80+ years of relevant experience in the energy sector and more than 15 years of experience in Africa and can carry out who the complete scope of project development including sourcing, early development, financing, construction management including full operation and maintenance.

 

Kounoune Power (Senegal):67 MW Simple Cycle: MPG has completed in January 2008 (4 months ahead of the contractual deadline) Kounoune Power Plant (through Kounoune Power, its SPV in Senegal), a 67.5MW diesel power plant (running on HFO 380), located in Senegal, under a 15-years BOO contract with the local utility Senelec. The €68m project was completely developed, financed, and realized by Melec PowerGen (30% equity, 70% long term loans, arranged by IFC, with the participation of ADB, BOAD, Proparco, and CBAO). The project was realized by Matelec in partnership with Mitsubishi, through MHI Equipment Europe, who supplied the gensets and contributed to the EPC and O&M. 

 

Thika Power (Kenya):87 MW Combined Cycle: In August 2013, MPG completed the construction of an 87MW HFO power plant with combined cycle in Kenya (Thika) under a 20-year BOO contract with the local utility Kenya Power Lightening Company 3 months ahead of the contractual deadline. The €112m project was completely developed, financed, and realized by Melec PowerGen (25% equity, 75% long term loans, arranged by IFC, with the participation of AfDB and ABSA Capital). The project was realized by Matelec in partnership with MAN Diesel Germany who supplied the gensets and contributed to the EPC and O&M. 

 

Tobene Power (Senegal):115 MW Combined Cycle: In December 2016, MPG completed the construction of a 115MW HFO power plant with combined cycle (Phase I completed in March 2016 14 months ahead of the contractual deadline). The €154m project was completely developed, financed, and realized by Melec PowerGen (25% equity, 75% long term loans, arranged by IFC, with the participation of BOAD, EAIF and FMO). The project was realized by Matelec in partnership with MAN Diesel France who supplied the gensets and contributed to the EPC and O&M. The power plant is currently being operated by Azura Power under a 20-year BOO contract with Senelec following the sale of Tobene Power to Azura Power in September 2019 with MP Energy providing management services to the plant under a 3-year management contract.

 

Malicounda Power (Senegal):120 MW Combined Cycle: MPG has commenced the construction of the Malicounda Power, a 120 MW combined cycle plant located in Mbour, Senegal under a 20-year BOT contract with the local utility Senelec. The €154m project will be realized by Matelec with Wartsila as a nominated subcontractor who will supply the gensets and contribute to the EPC and O&M. The project is completely developed, financed, and realized by Melec PowerGen (in partnership with Africa50 (30%) and Senelec (15%)) (25% equity, 75% long term loans, arranged by AfDB).
